Over the last several years, there have been some interesting observations that suggest the possibility that individuals who have a higher than average intake of selenium and vitamin E, may have less problems with cancer of the prostate. Now a study has been launched to answer this important question!
Bellingham and Whatcom County are one of more than 400 study locations throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada for the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT). This is a ground breaking research study now underway to determine if taking supplements of Selenium and/or Vitamin E can prevent the development of prostate cancer.
SELECT is sponsored by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and more than 32,000 men are needed to take part in the study. Local volunteers are needed to participate. There is no cost to the participant for the medical care, supplements or lab tests. Information is shared with your personal physician, and no biopsies or painful testing is required. You even get free vitamins, if you would like them!
If you are a white male, over the age of 55, or a black male over the age of 50, who is interested in learning more about this study, please call the St. Joseph Hospital Community Cancer Center, 738-6756, ext. 6756.
