Organ Donation Becomes True Personal Choice with New Laws

There are currently over 80,000 people in the United States, as well as 1,200 people in the Northwest, who are waiting to receive a donated organ. Half of these people will die waiting, because enough organs are not available. This problem is preventable, because approximately 40 percent of people who would like to become organ donor do not, because their family is either unaware of their decision or unable to support the decision at the time of death.

A new law in Washington State now enables an individual to record their personal wishes on organ donation and allow these wishes to be legally carried out by LifeCenter Northwest, the designated organ procurement organization for our region. The Living Legacy Registry that went into effect on June 16 creates such a system and provides certified LifeCenter employees access to confirm the wishes of the organ donor. The doctors and staff of FCN support the organ donation process, because we witness the benefits of life-saving transplants.
